50 Cent is a rapper, actor and entrepreneur born in South Jamaica, Queens in New York City with an estimated net worth of $275 million dollars. 50 Cent’s first major move was in 2003 when he released his commercial debut album Get Rich or Die Tryin’. The album launched 50 cent’s career as it went eight times platinum partly due to the runaway hit song “In Da Club”.
After his rap career blew up, 50 cent started his own record label “G-Unit Records” with fellow rappers Lloyd Banks & Young Buck. G-Unit evolved beyond music to eventually include a clothing company which signed a 5 year deal with Reebok to distribute the “G-Unit sneakers” shoe line.
50 Cent had also obtained a minority stake (estimated 2.5 to 3%) in Glacéau, the company that produced Vitamin Water, as part of an endorsement deal. Glacéau was later acquired by Coca-Cola in 2007 for $4.1 billion, which earned 50 Cent $100 million after taxes!
50 Cent has more recently founded a new venture called SMS Audio. SMS Audio features a line of studio headphones – similar to Dr. Dre’s Beats headphones – that offer ‘Studio Mastered Sound’ audio quality with noise cancellation. Sounds like he’s trying to keep up with his mentor Dr. Dre, but he’s not the only one bringing competition to the table! Soul by Ludacris headphones is also competing in the same market, but maybe they’re all on to something because Dr. Dre has made more money selling his headphones then he has been from producing his music! Super producer Timbaland has also joined 50 Cent’s SMS Audio as an investor partner, serving as a member of the board of directors, which will greatly boost the reputation of the brand.
