10 Best Selling Hip Hop Albums of All Time

Hip hop is HUGE in the wolrd of music and the culture. The number of album sales can, at times, be mind-boggling. To celebrate the love of hip hop, we thought it about time we look at the top 10 selling hip hop albums of all time and how many units were sold in the United States.

10. 50 Cent – Get Rich or Die Tryin’ (8.3 million)

In 2003 50 Cent hit the scene big with Get Rich or Die Tryin’, which blew up after the single of In da Club was released. The album would vault 50 Cent to worldwide fame and it not only sold nearly 900,000 in its first week but also sold over 12 million around the world.

9. Nelly – Country Grammar (8.6 million)

In 2000 Nelly and his ripped body hit the scene with Country Grammar, which sold 235,000 copies in the first week alone. It was his debut album, which made the success even more surprising, but the rapper from St. Louis was 9x platinum with the album, which such hits as Ride wit Me, and E.I.

8. Beastie Boys – Licensed to Ill (9 million)

License to Will was released in 1986 and it is the only album on the list from the 1980’s when hip hop started to get big. Not only did Def Jam’s classic sell 9 million in the U.S. alone, but it was the very first hip hop album to top the Billboard 200 chart. “Fight for Your Right” was one of the biggest songs of the 1980’s and it put the Beastie Boys on the hip hop map where they would stay for a long time.

7. 2Pac – All Eyez on Me (9 million)

In 1996 All Eyez on Me was released and not only is the 7th best-selling hip hop album of all time, but 2pac is only behind Eminem for the highest hip hop artist of all time and his life was cut tragically short. California Love with Dr. Dre was on the album, which is a hip hop classic.

6. 2Pac – Greatest Hits (10 million)

2Pac’s Greatest Hits album was released in 1998 and it is the highest selling hip hop greatest hits album of all time. It includes some of his prolific songs many of which are praised for their lyrics.

5. MC Hammer – Please Hammer, Don’t Hurt ‘Em (10 million)

The parachute pants and rap that was a little pop infused may not be ideal for hardcore hip hop fans, but MC Hammer ruled the early 90’s and U Can’t Touch This is one of the biggest songs of the decade. Please, Hammer, Don’t Hurt ‘Em was on the top of the Billboard 200 for a whopping 21 weeks.

4. The Notorious B.I.G. – Life After Death (10.2 million)

1997’s Life After Death is not only the 4th best hip hop selling albums of all time, but also considering one of the best of all time as well. The album was released only two weeks after he died in a Las Vegas shooting and one of the songs on the album tells the future in You’re Nobody (Til Somebody Kills You).

3. The Eminem Show (10.3 million)

The Eminem Show was the artists huge follow up to The Marshall Mathers LP and Eminem is the only hip hop artist that has two albums that have sold over 10 million copies.

2. The Marshall Mathers LP (11 million)

Eminem burst onto the scene in 2000 with the release of the Marshall Mathers LP and he leads the pack when it comes to solo hip hop artists. Not only does he have the top two spots on this list, but overall he is the best- selling hip hop artist of all time.

1. OutKast – Speakerboxx/The Love Below (11.4 million)

This album released in 2003 is a double-album and while it “only” sold just over 5.5 million units it is doubled with the double album. The duo from Atlanta of Big Boi and Andre 3000 hit the vein with this classic hip hop album that fused other music as well in a sound that is all its own.
