Rakim Mayers, who goes by the stage name ASAP Rocky (or A$AP Rocky) is a rapper with a net worth of $3.5 million. A former drug dealer with plenty of street cred, ASAP Rocky’s rap career blew up in 2011 when he released his first hit single “Peso.”
Growing up in Harlem, Rocky faced a tough childhood that involved living in homeless shelters with his mom while his dad was in prison, and selling crack cocaine in the Bronx. Rocky began rapping at a young age. When Rocky was only 13, his brother was killed in Harlem. It was this incident more than anything that convinced the artist to pursue rapping more seriously.
In 2007, Rocky joined the Harlem hip-hop music and lifestyle crew ASAP Mob (ASAP stands for “Always Strive and Prosper.”) ASAP Rocky began to work on his own music, and in 2011 his first single “Peso” was leaked online. The song quickly became a major underground hit and earned Rocky the attention of several major labels. Rocky soon signed to RCA Records and released his first mixtape, “Live. Love. ASAP,” on the RCA imprint Polo Grounds Music. The mixtape features performances from ASAP crew members ASAP Ferg, ASAP Nast, ASAP Twelvy, and ASAP Ty Beats, as well as other guest rappers like Fat Tony and Schoolboy Q.
The next year, ASAP Rocky joined Kendrick Lamar and Drake on Drake’s Club Paradise Tour. In 2013, he released his studio debut, “Long. Live. ASAP.” Among the album’s many featured artists were Schoolboy Q, Santigold, Kendrick Lamar, 2 Chainz, Drake, Big K.R.I.T., Yelawolf, and ASAP Ferg. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 139,000 copies in the U.S. in its first week. Since then, Rocky has also been a contributor to several other tracks, including the remix of ASAP Ferg’s 2013 hit single “Work.”
The “ASAP” in ASAP Rocky comes from the hip-hop collective known as the “ASAP Mob.” This collective includes not only rappers, but also record producers, music video directors, fashion designers, and other artists. Although he is not one of the founding members of the group, because of his popularity, Rocky has become the Mob’s flagship member. The Mob’s first official release was the 2012 mixtape “Lord$ Never Worry,” which they gave away as a free download.
After Rocky, ASAP Ferg became the second member of the ASAP Mob to sign a major label deal when he also joined with RCA / Polo Grounds. He broke through with the single “Work,” and later released an official remix of “Work” which featured Rocky alongside other rappers French Montana, Schoolboy Q and Trinidad James.
