Drake’s Way to the Top: Inside Champagne Papi’s Champagne Lifestyle
Drake’s net worth “stacking up like he’s fundraising”
At the fresh age of 26, Cash Money superstar Drake is already giving industry veteran Jay-Z a run for his money. Drizzy has already surpassed Jay-Z in terms of number one singles, and with Drake’s new album “Nothing Was the Same” flying off the shelves, the young rapper could soon outpace his older counterpart in the net worth department as well.
All of this doesn’t seem to be phasing Jay-Z, however, who is featured on the track “Pound Cake/Paris Morton Music 2” off of “Nothing Was the Same,” rapping “I had Benzes before you had braces.”
The album, which will be Drake’s fourth studio album, has already leaked online, and earned some major endorsements in the process. After the leak became available, artists like Wiz Khalifa and Tyler the Creator came out on Twitter in support of the album. Drake’s ex Rihanna even quoted lyrics from the new album on her Twitter feed.
Drake himself has not commented on the leak, but in this situation it seems like the leak might actually work out in his favor. With all of the hype generated around the album, Drake should be expecting huge numbers from his opening week sales.
The former Degrassi star, also known as “Champagne Papi” on Instagram, is already one of the highest-earning rappers in the business. Thanks to his record deal with Birdman’s Young Money Entertainment, as well as his successful acting career his and multiple endorsement deals, Drake’s current net worth is already valued at $40 million. His earnings landed him at number five on Forbes’ list of Hip Hop Cash Kings in 2012.
All of this wealth has done a good deal to facilitate Champagne Papi’s champagne lifestyle. Last year, Drake bought a new mansion in Hollywood for $7.7 million. The house had been on the market since 2009, and was originally priced at $27 million, but Drake managed to score a deal and got the house for under a third of the asking price.
The house includes seven bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, a wine cellar, a tennis court, a volleyball court, a gym, a games room, a massage room, a library, a 24-seat theater, and even comes complete with a Playboy mansion-inspired grotto pool. The Toronto-born rapper put his two luxury Miami condos up for sale before moving into his new Hollywood home.
To get to and from his new Hollywood abode, Champagne Papi has been known to cruise around in a number of luxury cars, including a Maybach, a Range Rover, a Bentley Continental GT convertible, and his latest acquisition, a $2 million Bugatti Veyron Sang Noir.
With these new purchases, Drake is joining an elite class of rappers who can boast multimillion-dollar earnings year after year. Since blowing up on the hip-hop earnings scale in 2010, when he brought in an estimated $10 million, Drake has managed to increase his earnings every year. In 2011, he brought in $11 million, and in 2012, that number shot way up to $20.5 million. And, at least for now, it seems that Drake’s fortune will only continue to grow.
So far, Drake has been successful in terms of album sales figures, but when it comes to bringing home the big bucks, Drake’s biggest earnings come from his concert tours. According to Pollstar, Drake’s nightly gross from concert ticket sales is well above $500,000. Last year’s “Club Paradise Tour” earned Drake $42 million overall.
Hip Hop Net Worth projects that Drake’s next tour will be even bigger than last year’s, and will gross somewhere around the $50 to $55 million range. These earnings, along with the earnings he brings in from album sales and endorsement deals, mean that Drizzy is the most likely rapper to start challenging the net worths of established veterans like Jay-Z, Birdman, and Kanye West in the next five to 10 years.
Drake himself admits that his wealth is getting huge. On his new song “Too Much,” featuring Sampha, Drake raps: “I’ve been stacking up like I’m fundraising.”
Surely it seems that this artist who “started from the bottom” is well on his way to the top.
