Power Couple Jay-Z and Beyonce Now Worth Over a Billion Dollars.
It’s official: If Jay-Z and Beyoncé were one person (which they basically are these days), that person would be the second billionaire in hip-hop.
Jay-Z, with a personal net worth of $550 million, is already the third richest rapper in the biz. His wife Beyoncé has also been bringing in a fair amount of coin herself recently; in 2012 her personal net worth jumped from $300 million to $380 million thanks to chart-topping album sales, her seemingly endless endorsement deals and acting roles, and revenue from her brief but successful Revel Presents: Beyoncé Live tour – her first concert dates after giving birth to Blue Ivy Carter.
Then in 2013, Beyoncé’s net worth climbed even higher to a total of $450 million, which, when combined with Jay-Z’s $550 million, makes them the first billionaire couple in hip-hop history. This boost in net worth comes from a number of factors including strong album sales from her fifth studio album “Beyoncé,” $188.6 million in gross revenue from the 2013 dates of her “Mrs. Carter World Tour,” sales of her signature perfume line “Heat,” the release of her self-directed autobiographical film “Life is But a Dream” on HBO, and the “Mrs. Carter in H&M” ad campaign.
Crazy in Love and Crazy Rich
How did hip-hop’s most popular couple become hip-hop’s first billionaire couple? Well, it seems that when you combine two incredibly powerful people together, something pretty amazing happens.
Since they started dating in 2002, both Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s careers and personal fortunes have been on the rise, and a great deal of their individual success can be attributed to their collaborative efforts. Since 2002, the couple has released over a dozen hit songs together, including “Crazy in Love,” the song that served as a launching pad for Beyoncé’s solo career.
Their touring incomes have also climbed since the two became a couple. Jay-Z was a featured guest on Beyoncé’s 2009 “I Am…” world tour, which grossed $119.5 million and became Beyoncé’s highest-grossing solo tour up to that time. And now it looks like their first co-headlining tour, the “On the Run” world tour, could become one of the highest earning tours of all time. Billboard recently estimated that the tour will gross around $5.2 million per show– one of the highest nightly grosses in concert history. With 19 dates on the tour, this could easily put the earnings for the tour around the $100 million mark – an impressive figure for such a short tour.
The Carter Business Empire
When the couple first started dating, Beyoncé was just beginning to strike it out on her own as a solo artist, while Jay-Z had already established himself as a major business mogul. By the time the couple were married in 2008, Jay-Z had already started his own record label, bought and sold the Rocawear clothing company, started an advertising agency, and invested in a number of other business ventures including an upscale sports bar, a line of beauty products, the Barclays Center stadium, and the Brooklyn Nets.
Since they started dating, however, it looks like Beyoncé has been taking some cues from Jay-Z in the business world. The $50 million endorsement deal she signed with Pepsi in 2012 bore a striking resemblance to the deal Jay-Z signed in 2006 with Anheuser Busch to become the co-brand director of Bud Select beer. Beyoncé also launched her own fashion line, “House of Deréon,” in 2005, and her “Heat” fragrance line, which she launched in 2010, has become the best-selling celebrity fragrance line in history.
The Celebrity Power Couple Rich List
Now that the Carters have crossed the billion-dollar mark, they’ve joined a super elite group of celebrity billionaire couples at the top of the rich list. Other celebrity couples with a combined net worth of $1 billion or more include Janet Jackson and Wissam Al Mana with a combined net worth of $1.15 billion, Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw with a combined net worth of $3 billion, and, at the top of the list, Salma Hayek and Francois-Henri Pinault with a whopping $15 billion net worth between the two of them.
In terms of the hip-hop world, the Carters don’t have much company at the top of the celebrity couple rich list. If you count R&B artists, then Janet Jackson is the highest on the list (thanks to her marriage to billionaire Qatari businessman Wissam Al Mana), and Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon, with a combined net worth of $550 million, are the closest to reaching the Carters’ billion-dollar milestone next. Will and Jada Pinkett Smith also get an honorable mention, but sit lower on the list with a combined net worth of $220 million.
The World’s Most Powerful Power Couple?
The Carters also represent something unique in that they’re both major contributors to their combined net worth. Of all the celebrity couples that have reached the billion-dollar mark, there’s no couple that looks nearly as equal in terms of each partner’s individual net worth. Janet Jackson’s earnings have been strong over her career, but her actual net worth doesn’t come close to matching her husband’s. And the individual net worths of couples like Steven Spielberg & Kate Capshaw and Salma Hayek & Francois-Henri Pinault are even farther apart.
The Carters are also arguably the most influential of all the billionaire couples, and easily the most influential couple in hip-hop. Beyoncé was included in Time Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People in the World” list in 2013 and 2014, and Forbes Magazine recently ranked her as the number one most powerful celebrity in the world, while Jay-Z came in at number six on the same list. Jay-Z’s Roc Nation record label and management company is also responsible for many of the other most influential celebrities in the world, including musicians like Rihanna and Calvin Harris, as well as athletes like Robinson Cano, Victor Cruz, and Kevin Durant. And, oh yeah, the Carters are also good friends with the Obamas. So as far as power couples go, the Carters are definitely one for the ages.
It’s good to be a Carter!
