Toronto-bred Abel Tesfaye, aka the Weeknd, is a singer, songwriter, and producer with a net worth of $2.5 million. He was born in Scarborough, Ontario, in 1990, and is of Ethiopian descent. This alternative R&B singer initially found success by releasing a series of anonymous tracks through YouTube. After generating a fair amount of hype around his songs, and earning a solid endorsement from fellow Torontonian Drake, Weeknd revealed his identity and went on to release three successful mixtapes in 2011.

Weeknd’s first mixtape, “House of Balloons,” was made in collaboration with producers like Doc McKinney and Illangelo, and was released in March 2011. Five months later, he released a his second mixtape, “Thursday,” and then followed that up with a third, “Echoes of Silence” in December 2011. All three of these releases were met with critical acclaim, especially “House of Balloons,” which was shortlisted for the 2011 Polaris Music Prize.

During that time Drake invited Weeknd to perform at his Second Annual OVO Fest. Soon after, Weeknd was hitting big stages like Coachella Festival in California, the Primavera Sound Festivals in Spain and Portugal, and London’s Wireless Festival. He also began to appear as a guest artist for other successful rappers, including appearances on Wiz Khalifa’s “Remember You” and Juicy J’s “One of Those Nights.”

Because of Drake’s heavy involvement in Weeknd’s success, virtually every hip-hop insider had assumed that Weeknd would sign to Drake’s OVO (October’s Very Own) music group. The two had even talked of forming a group together called OVOXO (a combination of Drake’s OVO music group and Weeknd’s XO group) after releasing a collaborative mixtape under the same name.

It came as a surprise, then, when in October 2012, Weeknd turned down an offer to join Drake’s OVO crew on Birdman’s YMCMB Records. This proved to be a good move for Weeknd, as only weeks later he would sign a deal with Republic Records. Soon after, Weeknd released “Trilogy,” a remastered version of his first three mixtapes, as a joint venture between Republic and XO. Drake, for his part, was not happy with the arrangement. His retaliatory tweets soon led to an all-out beef between the two artists.

Latest Venture: Kiss Land

On March 17 2013, Weeknd announced that his upcoming album would be titled “Kiss Land.” He premiered the album’s title track on May 16 2013. Check out the official music video for it below.
