Timothy Zachery Mosley, or Timbaland, is a producer, rapper, and songwriter with a net worth of $80 million. As a producer, Timbaland revolutionized the hip-hop industry in the late ‘90s and early ‘00s by crafting his own instantly recognizable production sound and bringing artists like Missy Elliott, Ginuwine, Aaliyah, and Jay-Z to the forefront of the pop music scene.
Hip-Hop and R&B Producer
Born in Virginia in 1972, Timbaland began his hip-hop career spinning records and making beats as “DJ Timmy Tim.” His first big break came when he was asked to work with Missy Elliott back when she was a part of the R&B group Sista. His work with the group started to get noticed, and in 1996 he produced Ginuwine’s debut album “Ginuwine… the Bachelor,” as well as Aaliyah’s album “One in a Million.” Both were mainstream hits, and these served as a launching point for Timbaland’s career. Throughout the later 1990s and beyond, Timbaland worked with some of the biggest stars in the hip-hop and R&B world like Ludacris, Snoop Dogg, Missy Elliott, Nas, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Pharrell, T.I., Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Fabolous, T-Pain, NeYo, Akon, and Pitbull, producing major hit singles like Missy Elliott’s “Work It,” Aaliyah’s “Try Again,” Ginuwine’s “Pony,” and Jay-Z’s “Dirt Off Your Shoulder.”
After establishing himself as perhaps the most sought-after producer in hip-hop, Timbaland began to make ventures into other musical genres. In 2002, Timbaland worked closely with Justin Timberlake on his first solo album “Justified.” This led to collaborations with other pop artists like Nelly Furtado, Ashlee Simpson, and the Pussycat Dolls. Timbaland worked with Justin Timberlake again on his second album “FutureSex/LoveSounds.” From this album came the major hit singles “Sexy Back,” “Summer Love,” “My Love,” and “What Goes Around… Comes Around.” Timbaland has since crossed over into the rock and alternative genres thanks to collaborations with Duran Duran and Bjork, and continues to work with pop superstars like Madonna, Mariah Carey, the Jonas Brothers, Fall Out Boy, and Elton John.
Mosley Music Group
In 2006, after disbanding his former label Beat Club Records, Timbaland started a new label, Mosley Music Group (MMG), under Universal Music Group’s Interscope Records. MMG’s first release was the platinum album “Loose” by Nelly Furtado. Current artists on MMG include Nelly Furtado, Chris Cornell, OneRepublic, D.O.E., and Keri Hilson.
Timbaland has been releasing solo records as well as duo albums with longtime collaborator Magoo since 1997. His first major solo hit came in 2007 with “Timbaland Presents: Shock Value,” which featured numerous big-name collaborators like Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado, Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, OneRepublic, and the Hives. The album was later certified platinum. His follow-up, “Shock Value II,” also featured well-known guests like Justin Timberlake, Chad Kroeger, Miley Cyrus, Nelly Furtado, Katy Perry, Jet, and D.O.E, but failed to chart as highly as the first installment of “Shock Value.”
In summer 2013 Timbaland came clean about his former addiction to the opioid OxyContin. “I was popping pills,” he said. After friends confronted him, however, Timbaland says that he was able to beat his drug addiction, “just like that.”
Le Sutra Liqueur
Like many other hip-hop artists, Timbaland is also pushing his own brand of alcoholic beverage. His drink is called Le Sutra, which he describes as “a sexy liqueur.” And just like Diddy, Timbaland has his own equity stake in his liquor brand as well. “I am an owner,” he said. “I don’t do anything unless I own it.”
Latest Venture: Textbook Timbo and Reunion with Jay-Z
Recently Timbaland reunited with Jay-Z after a rift had emerged between the two. After working with Jay-Z to produce several songs on his blockbuster album “Magna Carta Holy Grail,” Timbaland signed to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label. Currently Timbaland is working on another solo album, which will be called “Textbook Timbo.” Timbaland had previously stated that the album would be called “Shock Value III,” and then “Rebirth.”
